Bhutan

Land of the Thunder Dragon (and Chill Vibes) ⛰️🐉

1/4/20253 min read

So, picture this: December in Bhutan. Crisp mountain air, prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, and a sense of peace that just washes over you. That was my experience when I joined a tour with Sai Shishir Tours, exploring this magical kingdom from December 22nd to 28th, 2024.

Our Crew and the Cozy Coasters

We were a fun bunch of 25, led by our awesome tour guide, Mr. Harish. Two Toyota Coasters were our chariots, taking us through Phuentsholing, Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro. Shoutout to our drivers, Lumbuji and Chotu, for those smooth rides!

Bhutanese Life: Slow and Steady Wins the Race

One thing you'll quickly notice about Bhutan is its relaxed pace. People start their day a bit later, around 10:30, and wrap things up by 5:30. It's a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of city life. Just keep in mind that most shops and attractions close early, and the sun sets around 5:30 - 6:00 pm, so plan your days accordingly. Oh, and don't forget those monasteries and monuments close their doors to visitors by 4:30 pm!

Adventures and Awesome Sights

We ticked off some bucket-list experiences, like:

  • Tiger's Nest Monastery: What a hike! But the views and the sense of accomplishment were worth every step.

  • White-water rafting in Punakha: Winter meant milder currents, perfect for first-timers like us!

  • Dochula Pass: Breathtaking Himalayan views (on a clear day, of course!).

  • Punakha Dzong: This ancient fortress is a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture.

  • Kuensel Phodrang: The massive golden Buddha statue overlooking Thimphu is truly awe-inspiring.

  • TaDzong National Museum: A fascinating glimpse into Bhutan's rich history and culture.

  • Chelela Pass: The highest motorable road in Bhutan, offering stunning panoramic views.

  • Kharbandi Gompa: A beautiful temple dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, nestled amidst lush greenery.

We even got to try on traditional Bhutanese outfits - the Gho and Kira - and felt like royalty for a day!

Foodie Finds and Friendly Faces

Our tour operators kept us well-fed with delicious Indian vegetarian meals (with a chicken curry option for those who wanted it). But the real foodie highlight was the Motorist Inn Motel in Karjipara, where we had the tastiest home-style lunch and breakfast. It's the perfect pit stop on your way to Bhutan, about an hour from the Bagdogra airport.

And speaking of highlights, the people we met on this trip were amazing! My wife and I connected with a diverse group - a Carnatic dancer, a foreigner, an engineer, a banker, a wise senior, a passionate cricketer, a Taxpayer, an army man and a talented developer, to name a few. We shared stories, laughter, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Bhutan: A Must-Visit!

Bhutan, known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon, is a serene kingdom nestled in the Eastern Himalayas. With its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and commitment to Gross National Happiness, Bhutan offers a unique and enriching travel experience. It is a country that truly touches your soul. From its stunning landscapes and rich culture to its warm hospitality and laid-back vibe, it's a destination that will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired. Just remember to pack your hiking boots, your camera, and an open mind!

P.S. Don't forget to check out the Thimphu Clothing Hub for some awesome clothes and Paro for unique handicrafts. And if you're in Phuentsholing, grab some amazing coffee and Dumplings at Kuenga Hotel opposite to Zangtopelri. You won't regret it!

A Big Thanks to Our Bhutanese Family

A huge shoutout to our incredible guides, Sonam and Tashi, for not only showing us the wonders of Bhutan but also sharing their knowledge and stories, giving us a deeper appreciation for this amazing country. And of course, to Mr. Harish, our tour guide, for keeping us organized and entertained throughout the trip.
